With an estimated 3.5 million vegetarians in the UK, averaging at around 5% of the population, many vegetarians face the exhausting task of picking a meal from the restaurant menu that often lacks taste and flavour. Many chain restaurants disappoint in giving vegetarians a good choice of dishes to choose from. For instance Pizza Express, a well loved pizzeria and Italian restaurant provide customers with a restricted selection of meat free pizza toppings and pasta.
Strict vegetarian Sacha Denney said: “ Eating out is really awkward for me, because there is only a few options to choose from. I’d rather cook something I like than choose something I’m not really going to enjoy.”
Supermarkets have also been criticised for offering a limited selection of vegetarian products. Although the basics are stocked high such as Quorn chicken and beef mince, adventurous alternatives prove difficult to buy. Ready meals such as meat free sweet and sour chicken, and spaghetti bolognaise have been tainted by shoppers labeling them ‘bland’ and ‘tasteless’.
Many vegetarians now prefer to buy vegetarian food from selective markets or health shops.
Holland And Barrett has been praised in selling a wide range of vegetarian food. Stocking goods such as homemade mix for sausages and burgers, vegetables stock and a range of meat free snacks. Vegetarians are now facing greater alternatives for meal times.
Many cities are now facing a surge in vegetarian restaurants. The Hutch in Canterbury is enjoying great success after receiving rave reviews. Offering lunch and dinner menus, combining discounts and offers have proven popular amongst meat free and meat eaters. Head Chef, Riccardo Isolini said: “I think it’s great that there’s just a restaurant aimed at vegetarians. It was hard to establish our self as a vegetarian restaurant but we have received great customer feedback and people are really talking.”
