Gastro pubs aren’t a new concept. Dating back to the late 1980’s the gastro pub emerged from young chefs buying cheap pubs and churning out high quality food.
With gastro pubs becoming more popular, the traditional pub is slowly diminishing. Favourite pub grubs meals such as sausage and mash and Shepherd’s pie have been swapped for soufflés and skate wings.
Recent reports now show that seven in ten (73%) Britons prefer to eat at a pub compared to 63 per cent who prefer to for a drink. Now as more pubs open up their kitchens, they are now being known for their meals instead of their beers.
Celebrity chefs including Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsay have become cavaliers of the gastro pub format. Heston Blumenthal gastro pub the Hinds Head has gone from strength to strength pulling in £136,196, up from £51,088 the previous year. A basic soup can set you back £6.35 whilst a pudding can cost diners £6.50.
The smoking ban, cheap alcoholic drinks and the credit crunch have collectively had a major setback on the pub industry. Pubs are now reinventing themselves, serving quality local food to boost their flagging profits. As more pubs switch to a gastro pub this has now become the chosen choice of eatery. Gastro pubs are now becoming more popular than foreign food restaurants such as Chinese and Indians as Brits prefer high end food with a modern twist.
Gone are the traditional beams, rustic decor and a collection of antiques and is replaced with modern furniture, polished bars and brass fittings.
As more Gastro pubs swamped towns, they are becoming most popular in city centres. Many people favour the gastro pub of a relax dining experience over a tight cramped restaurant.
However, for some pubs reinventing themselves as a gastro pub is not an option. Traditional pubs, which serve bar snacks, scampi fries and standard pub grub, are standing their ground.
Tim Lee owner of the White swan in Louth said: “Turning my pub into a gastro pub will go against everything I believe in. People come into my pub because our biggest priority is the beer and we serve traditional pub food, which people enjoy.
